Homeschooling Program

Modulo is a homeschooling program designed for families who want a custom educational, social and childcare plan for their unique children, but may lack the time and expertise to do the research and setup themselves.  Over the last seven years, we’ve done extensive research on the best curriculum, local & online classes, how to find friends, how to assess children’s progress. We want to make sure they’re at least at grade level to keep their options open should they want to return to school - but also evaluate progress from a more multi-dimensional perspective (social, emotional and academic) -and relative to the goals of each family and passion and skills of each student.

Here’s some more information about our homeschooling program so you can find out if it’s a good fit for your family.

A unique and personalized Homeschooling Program

Modulo develops a unique learning plan for every family based on their child’s interests, how they thrive as a learner and family priorities such as learning goals (STEAM/Project-based learning), schedule, cost and screen time. No homeschooling program looks the same and each is constantly evolving to ensure every family thrives.

PreK-12th grade Homeschooling Program

We support families with children ages zero through the end of high school and through the college admissions cycle to make sure children are thriving at every stage. Families can join when their kids are 6, 12 or 19.

Mastery-Based Homeschooling Program

When students learn 1-1, at the right pace for them or independently with materials that ensure they master one concept before moving on to the next, they learn better. Benjamin Bloom found that 1-1 instruction results in learning that is 2 standard deviations higher than classroom instruction. For curriculum, we favor mastery-based materials. And that is regardless of whether the person instructing is a parent, caregiver or teacher. At Modulo, we vet our educational resources to be mastery-based and encourage 1-1 instruction with students. Certainly, not every subject needs to be taught 1-1, and some (such as theater,  foreign language, creative writing) can benefit greatly from group work and collaboration. Additionally, by bringing all a student’s teachers/caregivers/collaborators together in one classroom, it’s our aim to flip the teacher/student ratio from 1:30 to 30:1 !

Social Homeschool Program

Modulo is a homeschool program focused on healthy socialization. We have our own community and support families in finding nearby friends and joining or starting local groups. Play and Collaboration is vital to intellectual development with peers who share their interests and talents. Likewise, we believe that families need support to help raise their children and we are deeply invested in

Secular Homeschool Program

Modulo is a secular homeschool program. What this means is that we’ve vetted all the curriculum, classes and other educational resources we recommend to families are secular. They do not espouse a religious point of view. While we appreciate that many families have a faith they follow (and many on our team do as well), we believe in the separation of religion and education. We want families to be able to trust that all educational resources we recommend are secular. Families are welcome and encouraged to find their own faith-based materials outside of Modulo if they desire.

Homeschool Program rooted in scientific understanding

All the educational resources we recommend are based on the most reliable scientific research. This means, for example that are materials recognize that climate change is real and evolution is real.

Progressive and inclusive Homeschooling Program

In the educational resources we recommend, especially in literature and social studies, we favor programs that equally represent women and minorities. These stories are vital to our understanding of history and politics. Some of the greatest works of literature and art were created by women and minorities and are too often left out ot standardized curriculum. We are an anti-racist homeschooling program.

Compassionate homeschooling program, rooted in unconditional positive regard

We embrace the developmental interaction approach, encouraged by Bank Street College of Education. In this approach, teachers and other specialist Too often children are treated unkindly, bullied and dismissed in school.  We assume the best in children and treat them with kindness and compassion. And we expect all the educators and programs we work with to do the same. We train our teachers to have an in-depth understanding of the developmental stage of each student - and teach from a trauma-informed perspective, taking into all the factors that might impact their learning. We also train families and caregivers in this approach so they can improve communication with kids.  Even further, we help students learn how to treat peers with respect and compassion. Treating students with kindness does not mean coddling or not challenging them. Rather, we treat them with respect and assume the best,  which challenges them to treat themselves with respect and do the best that they can do.

Academically challenging Homeschooling Program

We believe children learn best when they are challenged. It is our aim to choose educational resources that are both fun and challenging, make sure children are engaged at the right level and gently encouraged to strive towards their highest potential.

Fun & Engaging Homeschooling Program

While we seek to find educational resources that are challenging, we believe children learn best when they love learning. There is no reason to include dry, boring resources that children feel forced to do. When there is a strong, positive emotion associated with learning, that inspires children to work hard and move past obstacles, fostering grit and the ability to achieve whatever they set out to do in life.

Accessible and Affordable Homeschooling Program

It is Modulo’s mission to make our homeschooling program available to all students as quality education is a fundamental human right. We provide a free curriculum planner, unlimited free tutoring through masteryhour.org and scholarships to any family who would like our services but can’t afford the cost.

A homeschooling program with expert support

At Modulo, we have a team of child life specialists who are highly trained in education and childhood development. They are here to help children stay on track and support families and teachers every step of the way.

A homeschooling program that even works for kids enrolled in school (what?!)

Many families ask us if kids can be in school and homeschool and the answer is an unequivocal yes!  We want to support any family that wants to play a greater role in their child’s education, whether that’s a 1-1 math class once a week or an entire afterschool or summer camp program.

A homeschooling program that makes homeschooling easy

While many homeschooling programs help you with one piece of the puzzle, we help you solve your complete homeschooling picture drawing from all the wonderful resources from other homeschooling programs out there - from choosing curriculum, to finding tutors and making friends. Manisha Snoyer (co-founder of Modulo)

For the last 20 years, I’ve taught over 2000 children in 3 countries (of all socio-economic backgrounds). I pioneered an English language program in a conflict region in the Middle East. I’ve worked as a bilingual public school teacher at some of the highest and lowest performing public schools and in all five boroughs of NYC. I’ve tutored 18 subjects in three languages to some of the wealthiest families in NYC, San Francisco and Paris to make up for shortcomings in private schools they were paying up to $60,000 a year to attend.

Since 2015, I’ve helped hundreds of parents start microschools (way before this was a household buzzword). I founded CottageClass, the first marketplace for microschools and learning pods that was part of the Techstars 2018 class. In 2019, I created a virtual learning program to help families through the pandemic, a free online math tutoring program (masteryhour.org), and schoolclosures.org, a hotline developed in collaboration with Twilio and 80 other partners including Khan Academy, Revolution Foods and the Crisis Text Line, that served 100,000 families impacted by school closures.

I’ve climbed trees with children in forest schools in San Francisco, and tested new digital apps with kids in seven countries.

I’ve also coached dozens of families at different stages in their homeschooling journey. Most recently, I founded Modulo with homeschooling dad, best-selling author and tech entrepreneur Eric Ries, to help families curate their children’s education, social and childcare experiences drawing from a diverse array of in-person and online resources.

During the last three years, I’ve devoted much of my time to reviewing and testing secular homeschooling curriculum and other resource. I’ve spent the last three years talking to thousands of secular homeschooling families, and poring over tens of thousands of secular curriculum reviews and testing physical curriculum and digital apps for with hundreds of students to find the highest quality, most engaging, personalized learning materials for every type of learner.

I’ve spoken about homeschooling and modular learning at multiple venues including SXSW EDU, NY Tech Meetup, and on the LiberatedEd podcast.

In 2022, Modulo was one of 8 organizations who were awarded the Bridge Grant from the Vela Education Fund to expand access to homeschooling and modular learning to under-resourced communities.

My experience in education and homeschooling has led me to believe that there is no perfect education for every child, but families have an extraordinary amount of wisdom they can apply to building the perfect education for their individual child.

My goal with Modulo is to make it possible for any family to easily build a customized education that their child will love, and that will empower the whole family to thrive, taking into account, social, emotional and academic needs.

I love to answer questions from parents and receive feedback on how we can improve Modulo, so feel free to reach out anytime! I personally answer all the questions and comments readers leave on my blogs.

In my free time, I like hiking, traveling the world, tasting ceremonial grade matcha, enjoying dark chocolate.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brandeis University with highest honors, with a double degree in French Literature and American Studies and minors in Environmental Studies and Peace & Conflict Studies.

And I love to learn!
