The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling in Virginia

If you're considering homeschooling in Virginia, it's important to understand the legal requirements and available curriculum options. This comprehensive guide will provide you with all the information you need to know about homeschooling in Virginia, ensuring that you are well-prepared to embark on this educational journey.

Understand the Legal Requirements for Homeschooling in Virginia.

Before you begin homeschooling in Virginia, it's crucial to familiarize yourself with the legal requirements. In Virginia, homeschooling is regulated by the Virginia Department of Education. Parents or guardians who wish to homeschool their children must submit a Notice of Intent to the superintendent of their local school district. This notice should include information about the curriculum, the number of hours of instruction per day, and the qualifications of the parent or guardian providing the instruction. Additionally, parents must provide evidence of progress through annual assessments or evaluations. By understanding and adhering to these legal requirements, you can ensure a smooth homeschooling experience in Virginia.

If you’re looking for help, Mosaiku makes it easy to find your superintendent’s contact information, generate your letter of intent, create the required curriculum description and all other required paperwork.

Choose a Homeschooling Method and Curriculum.

Once you have familiarized yourself with the legal requirements for homeschooling in Virginia, it's time to choose a homeschooling method and curriculum that aligns with your child's learning style and educational goals. There are several different homeschooling methods to consider, such as traditional, classical, Charlotte Mason, and unschooling. Each method has its own unique approach to education, so it's important to research and determine which method will work best for your family.

After selecting a homeschooling method, you can then choose a curriculum that fits within that method. There are many curriculum options available, including pre-packaged curricula, online programs, and individual subject resources. Consider your child's interests, learning style, and academic needs when selecting a curriculum.

It's also important to remember that homeschooling allows for flexibility and customization. You can tailor the curriculum to meet your child's specific needs and interests, and make adjustments as necessary throughout the homeschooling journey. By choosing a homeschooling method and curriculum that suits your family's needs, you can create a personalized and effective educational experience for your child in Virginia.

Create a Schedule and Set Goals for Your Homeschool.

One of the key aspects of successful homeschooling is creating a schedule and setting goals for your homeschool. This will help provide structure and ensure that your child is receiving a well-rounded education. Start by determining how many hours per day or week you plan to dedicate to homeschooling. Consider your child's age, attention span, and other commitments when creating your schedule.

Next, set goals for what you want your child to achieve academically. These goals can be short-term, such as mastering a specific math concept, or long-term, such as completing a certain grade level by the end of the year. Setting goals will help you stay focused and track your child's progress.

When creating your schedule, be sure to include time for breaks, physical activity, and extracurricular activities. Homeschooling allows for flexibility, so take advantage of this by incorporating hands-on learning experiences, field trips, and other educational opportunities outside of the traditional classroom setting.

Remember, every child is unique, and what works for one family may not work for another. Be open to adjusting your schedule and goals as needed to meet the individual needs of your child. By creating a schedule and setting goals, you can ensure that your homeschooling journey in Virginia is organized, productive, and enjoyable for both you and your child.

Join a Homeschooling Support Group or Co-op.

Joining a homeschooling support group or co-op can be a valuable resource for both you and your child. These groups provide opportunities for socialization, networking with other homeschooling families, and sharing resources and ideas. They often organize field trips, group activities, and classes taught by parents or outside instructors.

Support groups and co-ops can also provide emotional support and guidance as you navigate the homeschooling journey. You can connect with experienced homeschoolers who can offer advice and encouragement, as well as share their own successes and challenges.

To find a homeschooling support group or co-op in Virginia, start by reaching out to your local homeschooling association or organization. They can provide you with a list of groups in your area and help you connect with other homeschooling families.

When choosing a support group or co-op, consider your child's interests and needs. Look for groups that align with your educational philosophy and offer activities and resources that will benefit your child. Attend a few meetings or events to get a feel for the group and see if it's a good fit for your family.

Joining a homeschooling support group or co-op can enhance your homeschooling experience and provide a sense of community. It's a great way to connect with other homeschooling families, share resources, and find support along your homeschooling journey in Virginia.

Keep Records and Submit Required Documentation to the State.

In Virginia, homeschooling families are required to keep records of their child's education and submit certain documentation to the state. This helps ensure that children are receiving an adequate education and allows the state to monitor homeschooling programs.

The specific documentation required may vary depending on your child's age and grade level, but generally, you will need to keep records of attendance, subjects taught, and any standardized test scores or assessments. You may also need to submit a notice of intent to homeschool and an annual progress report.

It's important to familiarize yourself with the specific requirements in Virginia and stay up to date with any changes or updates to the homeschooling regulations. The Virginia Department of Education website is a valuable resource for information on homeschooling requirements and documentation.

Keeping thorough and organized records not only helps you comply with state regulations, but it also allows you to track your child's progress and demonstrate their educational achievements. These records can be helpful if you ever need to provide proof of education, transfer to a different school or educational program, or apply for college or scholarships.

By keeping records and submitting the required documentation to the state, you can ensure that you are meeting the legal requirements for homeschooling in Virginia and provide a solid foundation for your child's education.

Manisha Snoyer (co-founder of Modulo)

For the last 20 years, I’ve taught over 2000 children in 3 countries (of all socio-economic backgrounds). I pioneered an English language program in a conflict region in the Middle East. I’ve worked as a bilingual public school teacher at some of the highest and lowest performing public schools and in all five boroughs of NYC. I’ve tutored 18 subjects in three languages to some of the wealthiest families in NYC, San Francisco and Paris to make up for shortcomings in private schools they were paying up to $60,000 a year to attend.

Since 2015, I’ve helped hundreds of parents start microschools (way before this was a household buzzword). I founded CottageClass, the first marketplace for microschools and learning pods that was part of the Techstars 2018 class. In 2019, I created a virtual learning program to help families through the pandemic, a free online math tutoring program (masteryhour.org), and schoolclosures.org, a hotline developed in collaboration with Twilio and 80 other partners including Khan Academy, Revolution Foods and the Crisis Text Line, that served 100,000 families impacted by school closures.

I’ve climbed trees with children in forest schools in San Francisco, and tested new digital apps with kids in seven countries.

I’ve also coached dozens of families at different stages in their homeschooling journey. Most recently, I founded Modulo with homeschooling dad, best-selling author and tech entrepreneur Eric Ries, to help families curate their children’s education, social and childcare experiences drawing from a diverse array of in-person and online resources.

During the last three years, I’ve devoted much of my time to reviewing and testing secular homeschooling curriculum and other resource. I’ve spent the last three years talking to thousands of secular homeschooling families, and poring over tens of thousands of secular curriculum reviews and testing physical curriculum and digital apps for with hundreds of students to find the highest quality, most engaging, personalized learning materials for every type of learner.

I’ve spoken about homeschooling and modular learning at multiple venues including SXSW EDU, NY Tech Meetup, and on the LiberatedEd podcast.

In 2022, Modulo was one of 8 organizations who were awarded the Bridge Grant from the Vela Education Fund to expand access to homeschooling and modular learning to under-resourced communities.

My experience in education and homeschooling has led me to believe that there is no perfect education for every child, but families have an extraordinary amount of wisdom they can apply to building the perfect education for their individual child.

My goal with Modulo is to make it possible for any family to easily build a customized education that their child will love, and that will empower the whole family to thrive, taking into account, social, emotional and academic needs.

I love to answer questions from parents and receive feedback on how we can improve Modulo, so feel free to reach out anytime! I personally answer all the questions and comments readers leave on my blogs.

In my free time, I like hiking, traveling the world, tasting ceremonial grade matcha, enjoying dark chocolate.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brandeis University with highest honors, with a double degree in French Literature and American Studies and minors in Environmental Studies and Peace & Conflict Studies.

And I love to learn!
