Free to Learn
Psychologist Peter Gray demonstrates that free play is the primary means by which children learn to control their lives, solve problems, get along with peers, and become emotionally resilient, unlike traditional schooling. The author draws on examples of anthropology, psychology, and history to explain why free play is a better tool for children's development, happiness and learning, than the institution of modern education. Peter Gray is a development psychologist and believes that there are more effective to encourage childhood education without the constraints of modern-day schooling. Parents have reviewed the book highly for being the incentive they needed for choosing to unschool their children. Many reviews appreciate what Peter Gray has to say about the value of play-based learning environments and techniques, in hopes to encourage students to self-teach and grow curiosity. Many reviews praise the author for tackling a difficult conversation and being honest in the face of educational reform. A few reviews have mentioned that his theories are based on corollaries rather than hard evidence. Some also don't agree with the hunter/gatherer scenarios he uses for why communal teaching works - many of the circumstances don't apply to modern-day living.
