About the workshop

With remote learning plans likely to continue at several school districts this fall, many families are considering pulling their children out of school and homeschooling. In this workshop we’ll address both practical and theoretical questions families may have about making the choice to homeschool. We’ll leave plenty of time for Q & A and will also be collecting questions in our registration form to make sure all concerns are addressed. Topics we’ll cover include:

  • What a “typical” day looks like

  • Staying connected socially

  • Connecting to a diverse & inclusive community

  • Choosing the optimal homeschool curriculum

  • Balancing work with homeschooling

  • How to start a homeschool co-op

  • Career opportunities for homeschool families

  • Making sure children are on track academically and developmentally (as well as different options for assessment and measuring progress)

  • Mastery-based learning

  • The benefits of family participation in learning

  • Your legal right to homeschool and how to register as a homeschooling family

  • Transitioning back to school after homeschooling

  • Building a portfolio for college and/or career

  • Talking to spouses and extended family about the choice to homeschool

The workshop will be facilitated by educators Manisha Snoyer and Monique Scott, with veteran homeschool mom Maria Gilmore on-hand to answer questions and provide support about her personal journey homeschooling. Manisha and Monique are long-term friends and collaborators, both teachers and education entrepreneurs with deep expertise in homeschooling, microschools and community activism. Maria has homeschooled her two daughters for seven years all over the world and is an active volunteer for schoolclosures.org.
