Intro to Homeschooling Workshop
Few know the secular homeschooling world better than Manisha Snoyer and Monique Scott, veteran teachers and homeschool parents, with nearly 30 years of collective experience supporting thousands of families choosing to play a bigger role in their children’s education. In this workshop, they’re joined by entrepreneur, writer and new homeschool dad Eric Ries as they discuss the ins and outs of homeschooling. Learn about different approaches to homeschooling, how to get started, plan curriculum, build healthy social relationships, how to find community and additional resources for support.
About the workshop
With remote learning plans in place at several school districts this fall, many families are considering pulling their children out of school and homeschooling. In this workshop Manisha Snoyer, Eric Ries and Monique Scott address both practical and theoretical questions families may have about making the choice to homeschool. The last portion of the workshop is an interactive discussion with families considering this path.

The workshop was facilitated by educators Manisha Snoyer and Monique Scott, with homeschool dad and entrepreneur Eric Ries on-hand to answer questions and provide support about his personal journey homeschooling. Manisha and Monique are long-term friends and collaborators, both teachers and education entrepreneurs with deep expertise in homeschooling, microschools and community activism.
Meet the facilitators
Manisha Snoyer
Manisha is a teacher and entrepreneur who recently re-located to the Bay area after 15 years in Brooklyn. She is passionate about empowering families and communities to provide personalized education to every child. Last year, she began working on, Modulo, a program to support families learning at home for the first time. In March, Manisha co-founded schoolclosures.org, a hotline and website to support families impacted by school closures. Since then, Schoolclosures.org has grown to 80 partner organizations sand 300 vounteers, helping over 100k families get critical support on issues including learning, meals, childcare, tech and mental health. Prior to founding schoolclosures, Manisha worked with hundreds of homeschool families and teachers via CottageClass, a platform to support teachers and parents starting homeschool co-ops and small microschools.
Monique Scott
Monique is an educator based in Brooklyn that loves teaching and has deep expertise in homeschooling and progressive schooling! She believes what children can achieve, create, and solve is limitless! Monique espouses an interest and strength based model that incorporates continuous individual attention and support. She founded Freebrook Academy in 2011. Since then she has supported homeschooling families and operated a homeschool community learning lab. She currently is the executive Director at Brooklyn Free School, a social justice based democratic school. Outside of BFS, she continues to support parents create an atmosphere of exploration and learning that is culturally informed, create community family events, and lead discussions on transforming our vision of education.
