Get started

Modular learning is an approach to learning where parents take ownership over curating their child’s education to fit their unique learning style. Whereas most approaches to education see the home as secondary to learning, modular learning recognizes that the home is actually the place where a child’s most accelerated learning is taking place all the time - and they want to optimize and support this natural process. Since parents design their child’s education, no modular learning education looks alike. Typically, children explore subjects of interest to them under the guidance of their parent, teacher and/or caregiver, in a small group or independently. Parents may choose this home-based learning with full-day programs, social activities, local classes, workshops, nature-based activities and on-line learning. Modular learning also allows parents the freedom and flexibility to curate an education schedule that fits better with their modern lifestyle, determining the hours of study - and combination of childcare, social time, activities and independent study that works best for their family. If you’re interested in taking more ownership of your child’s education, here are some resources to get you started.

Practical information

Depending on how you choose to customize your child’s education, you may choose to register as an independent learner in the state of California. Independent learners can file a Private School Affidavit if their child turns 6 after September 1, register with their local public school for an independent study, enroll in a charter school or enroll in an independent learning center. Parents who are certified teachers do not need to file. Some parents may also choose to attend their local school and curate their child’s education during afterschool hours.

Learning

One of the most delightful parts of independent learning is personalizing your child’s education, mixing and matching different approaches to create the ideal experience for your child. There’s no need to pick just one or set anything in stone as your child’s learning style and interests will certainly evolve as they grow and the world changes around them! Learn about different philosophies on learning, as well as practical resources available such as books, online classes, local organizations and more.

Social-Emotional Development

Many parents are becoming aware that play-based learning and social interaction are critical components to a child’s holistic development. Play teaches children critical skills like social cognition, spatial awareness and symbolism. It prepares children to work effectively on collaborative projects and make a positive impact in their world. And also - it’s fun! Learn about how to connect your child - and your whole family to a vibrant social community of independent learners and make best friends for life!
