Zinn Education Project

This website provides a variety of engaging learning activities and guides to help teachers for all grades to present and promote American history from all standpoints, not just what is traditionally printed in standard school textbooks. The website is easy to navigate through, and the categories are split into themes and time periods, all accompanied with captivating photos, encouraging the visitor to continue browsing. This worthy resource doesn't "just [tel]l students history, but [shows] them through experiential activities such as role plays." The website is based on Howard Zinn’s book titled "A People’s History of the United States". Parents and students can scan through the variety of history lessons to learn about a topic via articles, fiction and non-fiction books, videos and songs. Parents can appreciate the wide breadth of resources available, from audio and film clips to posters and picture books, and activities including role plays and poems to tackle the difficult and many times controversial subject of history. Many parents might not be keen to unleash this sort of history on their children. Depending on a parent's background, some of the lessons can be poignant and seen as baised.

Grades: 3rd grade - high school

Cost: Most of the teaching activities on this website are free. For more in-depth teaching guides, you are re-directed to one of the two collaborating foundations to buy books from their website (about $20-25).
