Mentors - Emily V
I currently teach 2nd grade at a small independent school in the Mission. Throughout my five years of teaching, I have constantly strived to improve my art. In particular, I am drawn to teaching topics and techniques that focus on the environment, or on tinkering and STEAM. I also have a Master's from Vanderbilt University in elementary education, and a bachelors from the University of Virginia in psychology.
I’m an educator who uses inquiry-based learning mixed with flair for self-directed discovery. I am a firm believer of project-based learning. This technique focuses on an essential question and allows students to discover information as they learn and create. I try to tie all my lessons to real-world discoveries and am happiest when my students discover the wonders of our natural world. This year, I also wrote the educational curriculum for Reserva, the Youth Land Trust. I am working with this new organization to create a platform for kids to learn about and help raise money to protect the rainforests. The curriculum should be up and running within the month so check it out here: https://reservaylt.org/
When I am not in the classroom, you can find me at adventuring outdoors or researching new tinkering ideas.
