Education is changing. There's more openness to seeing the educational value of a video game, and more resistance to rigid models of learning that bore kids and reinforce national standards (not children’s preferences(. This openness is reflected in the most popular programs kids are using today.

I tend to thinks think kids have a natural inclination to learn and are attracted to activities that support their natural curiosity. But sometimes, a program can be popular because it has deliberately built-in addictive mechanisms that are designed to hook users. This can be dangerous for a young, developing mind sensitive to this type of mind. Some programs are popular because they have big marketing budgets and have forged partnerships with governments and local school districts (but do poorly when it comes to engaging kids or foster deeping learning (a key of example of this is the reading programs that pervaded US schools, but have come under criticism due to their failure to align with the science of reading).

The following 34 programs receive at least one million searches every single month in the US alone, and up to 89M globally.

In order to evaluate these programs, we analyzed reviews of homeschooling parents and teachers who used them, and evaluated their educational value based on 15 key criteria.

  1. Boredom (1-10): Penalizes programs that rely on traditional, uninspiring learning models, leading to children being bored and participating only because their teacher requires it.

  2. Addictive Components (1-10): Deductions for programs with addictive elements that negatively impact children, based on parent feedback about difficulty in limiting usage. It can be challenging to distinguish between addictive and engaging. An addictive program may have high entertainment value, but do little to encourage skills like grit (pushing past obstacles) or creativity. Check your child’s energy level after they use this program. Are they happy and active, or do they get easily upset and feel sick to their stomach. This can be a guage of engagement vs. addiction.

  3. Violence (1-10): Points are deducted for the presence of any violent content, such as guns or blood. This also covers material that may be unnecessarily traumatic for young children, from our understanding of developmental psychology. Some parents let their kids watch horror movies at four, and we don’t judge that choice. Each child learns differently and processes information in dfiferent ways. While we encourage parents to be authentic and not hide difficult subject matters from children, children do have developing minds, and parents, not video games should discern when they are ready to process it.

  4. Unhealthy Competition (1-10): Programs that foster unhealthy competition and cause distress among children will be penalized.

  5. Excessive Prioritization of School Standards (1-10): Deducts points from programs that concentrate excessively on helping children meet school standards and perform well on standardized exams, rather than promoting deep, meaningful learning.

Manisha Snoyer (co-founder of Modulo)

For the last 20 years, I’ve taught over 2000 children in 3 countries (of all socio-economic backgrounds). I pioneered an English language program in a conflict region in the Middle East. I’ve worked as a bilingual public school teacher at some of the highest and lowest performing public schools and in all five boroughs of NYC. I’ve tutored 18 subjects in three languages to some of the wealthiest families in NYC, San Francisco and Paris to make up for shortcomings in private schools they were paying up to $60,000 a year to attend.

Since 2015, I’ve helped hundreds of parents start microschools (way before this was a household buzzword). I founded CottageClass, the first marketplace for microschools and learning pods that was part of the Techstars 2018 class. In 2019, I created a virtual learning program to help families through the pandemic, a free online math tutoring program (masteryhour.org), and schoolclosures.org, a hotline developed in collaboration with Twilio and 80 other partners including Khan Academy, Revolution Foods and the Crisis Text Line, that served 100,000 families impacted by school closures.

I’ve climbed trees with children in forest schools in San Francisco, and tested new digital apps with kids in seven countries.

I’ve also coached dozens of families at different stages in their homeschooling journey. Most recently, I founded Modulo with homeschooling dad, best-selling author and tech entrepreneur Eric Ries, to help families curate their children’s education, social and childcare experiences drawing from a diverse array of in-person and online resources.


During the last three years, I’ve devoted much of my time to reviewing and testing secular homeschooling curriculum and other resource. I’ve spent the last three years talking to thousands of secular homeschooling families, and poring over tens of thousands of secular curriculum reviews and testing physical curriculum and digital apps for with hundreds of students to find the highest quality, most engaging, personalized learning materials for every type of learner.

I’ve spoken about homeschooling and modular learning at multiple venues including SXSW EDU, NY Tech Meetup, and on the LiberatedEd podcast.

In 2022, Modulo was one of 8 organizations who were awarded the Bridge Grant from the Vela Education Fund to expand access to homeschooling and modular learning to under-resourced communities.

My experience in education and homeschooling has led me to believe that there is no perfect education for every child, but families have an extraordinary amount of wisdom they can apply to building the perfect education for their individual child.
